The Psalter of the Great Bible of 1539 A Landmark in English Literature John Earle 9781112166471 Books
As part of my personal spiritual practice, I read one Psalm everyday. This particular edition of the Psalter appeals to me because it lends an esthetic impact that enriches my time in biblical poetry. It is a facsimile copy, but the text is very clear, and there are no missing pages, giving this edition a great advantage over many facsimile prints. Be aware that it is written in Gothic script, which can be a challenge to read, especially in keeping straight when "ye" means "the" or "thee" or just "ye", or when that "f" is actually an "f" or is instead an "s". The text also comes from a time before standardized spelling, so unusual and variable spelling can be confusing, such as "sprete" for "spirit." Also, apparently the publisher uses different cover images when printing this book; mine has a photo of a bicycle, rather than the trees shown here. While the text of the Psalms comes straight from the Psalter of 1539, the introduction comes from the reprint of 1894, and is full of the higher criticism that was coming out of Germany at that time. But those remarks aren't printed with the text of the Psalms, so they are easy to ignore. There is also a back section of brief commentaries on the respective Psalms. This section is also full of higher critical remarks. But again, it is physically separated from the Psalm text, so it doesn't intrude on the reading of the Psalter itself.
If the Gothic script and spelling sounds too intimidating, THE PSALMS OF DAVID IN METRE; ACCORDING TO THE VERSION APPROVED BY THE CHURCH OF SCOTLAND AND APPOINTED TO BE USED IN WORSHIP is a good alternative.
